피부에 있는 세정맥, 모세혈관 또는 세동맥이 비정상적으로 확장된 것을 모세혈관 확장이라 한다. 그로 생긴 증상을 모세혈관 확장증(Telangiectasis)이라고 한다.
모세혈관 확장증을 원발성 모세혈관 확장증과 2차성 모세관 확장증으로 분류할 수 있다.
단순성 혈관종이나 복합성 혈관종, 또는 성망상 혈관종 등이 있을 때는 모세혈관 확장증이 있고 그 원인은 확실히 모른다.
이런 종류의 모세혈관 확장증을 원발성 모세혈관 확장증이라고 한다.

다음과 같은 병과 모세혈관 확장증이 동시 있을 수 있다

유전성 출혈성 모세혈관 확장증
거미상 모세혈관 확장증
편칙 모반양 모세혈관 확장증
모세혈관 확장성 운동실조증
그 외

다음과 같은 병이 있을 때 2차성 모세혈관 확장증이 생길 수 있다.

태양광선 노출,
노쇠,
방사능 치료,
화상,
외상,
유전성 질환,
지방성 종양,
홍반성 루프스,
공피증 ,
피부근염

이런 이유로 생기는 모세혈관 확장증을 2차성 모세혈관 확장증이라고 한다.
